Melbourne Cup Day

Cup fever has hit Australia and it seems to be all around us. As we were near Scone which is a big horse stud area we thought we would be bound to find something going on for the Cup there. We were informed that there was a race meeting in the next town of Musswellbrough, so we though we may as well head down and have a few bets on the local nags as well.In keeping with our own Addington Cup Day the following Tuesday I put a bottle of bubbly in the ice box.

We arrived at the course to find it was a lovely country meeting with a grass and treed car park and some lovely shade trees etc around the tote area of the course. People were dressed in their finery and had picnic hampers and the like so it all seemed very civilized. (like Addington used to be)

We were happy to be allowed in as Seniors for $6 instead of the usual $15! We put on a couple of bets and went around to the stand to watch. We were surprised to find that there was no commentary on the actual races and as they usually started way over the other side of the track no one seemed to know the race had actually started until they were just about to thunder over the finish line. We enjoyed seeing the bookies taking the bets and changing the odds as we never see this in NZ. I did manage to get a couple of collects but nothing on the M/Cup. Several races had an enquiry after for things like interference and one of the winners was disqualified due to be being underweight after he had won.

As the day wore on the young lads seemed to get into a few fisty cuffs as seems par for the course these days.
We eventually got back to our van at the close of the day and decided to just camp the in the pleasant surroundings for the night.
There were also about another 20 cars that were left behind as well.

This day at the races will have to make up for not attending the Addington Cup in ChCh with Jeff and Maree and Steve and Faye next week.
